A Fantastic First Day of School in Elwood

Two young children with backpacks stand in a hallway, a woman and two girls pose in front of a "Welcome Back" sign, and two older children with backpacks stand outside a school building.

Students across all four Elwood School District buildings – Elwood-John H. Glenn High School, Elwood Middle School, James H. Boyd Intermediate School and Harley Avenue Primary School – returned to classrooms on Sept. 2, marking the start of a new academic year filled with opportunities to learn, grow and reconnect with their school communities.

“We had a fantastic first day at John Glenn,” Principal Lindsay Fritch said. “Having our students and staff back in the building brought incredible energy to the halls. We’re truly excited to see what this school year brings. It's going to be a great year.”

“After 14 years in education, I can honestly say I have never experienced a school community quite like John Glenn,” Assistant Principal Tim Cipolla said. “Even after a long summer, everyone came back ready to teach, learn and support one another. From the moment our students walked through the doors with smiles on their faces, to the enthusiasm, care and rigor demonstrated by our staff, it was a truly refreshing and inspiring way to begin the school year.”

“Today was a great day for Elwood Middle School,” Principal Christina Moran said. “It was wonderful to welcome back our seventh- and eighth-grade students and meet our new sixth-grade students as they begin their middle school journey. Seeing our hallways filled with excitement, smiles and new connections was a beautiful reminder of what makes our school so special. I am incredibly grateful to our teachers and staff for their dedication and care in creating such a welcoming start for every student. We are so excited for the year ahead.”

“It was an amazing opening day at Boyd Intermediate School, and the halls and classrooms were abuzz with the energy that only a first day of school can bring,” Interim Principal Dr. Timothy Hoss said.

“What a wonderful first day at Harley Avenue,” Principal Julie Bilello said. “We were so excited to welcome back our first- and second-graders and, for the very first time, our new kindergarten students. It was so nice to see our students back together with friends, while also making new ones. There were plenty of smiles, a few nerves and lots of excitement as everyone settled into their new classrooms and routines. We had a great first day, and we are so excited for all that this new school year will bring.”
